Getting to the Core of Communication

Whether you have one student or an entire program that could benefit from a core vocabulary approach, this workshop is for you! Join this energetic presenter as she walks you through, and provides everything you need to start using this research-based and effective method as soon as you get back to your setting.

Participants will: learn why core vocabulary is such a powerful strategy, who may benefit from the approach, what it looks like for students with a variety of needs, how to prepare materials, lesson plans and activities, when (and how) to prompt and where to find resources. Each participant will leave the session with the confidence and skills they need to help users “Be more with core.”

Topics included:

• Core vocabulary overview, the importance of using core words
• Examples of how to provide core based AAC systems to individual students: low, mid, and high tech examples including modifications for specific students (ie: physical impairment, significant cognitive impairment, CVI, etc)
• Tips for rolling out a core vocabulary initiative
• Lesson planning with core in mind (including Target word approach)
• Partner skills tips & practice
• Hands-on practice with core boards and devices through fun games and activities
• Embedding core words and visuals throughout your student's day
• Top tips and activities to promote language & AAC use
