Description: District, school, and teacher leaders will find multiple strategies for building effective systems of support that guide educators as they navigate change. This collaborative study of the book Leading Well by Lucy Calkins offers a deep dive into the processes used by Teacher's College professional developers as they work to guide school leaders in supporting implementation of Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Let's connect, as literacy leaders across Wisconsin, and share what works, the challenges we face, and what we are planning to keep moving forward in this effort toward equitable literacy education and continuous improvement! As an added bonus, nuggets of implementation science will be shared to stimulate conversation and support the systems that we hope to establish across districts. Let's connect as professionals, learn together, and share our knowledge and skills!

About the Presenter:

Mary Jo Ziegler has worked in diverse educational settings for over 30 years. The first 15 years of her career were spent in classrooms teaching grades 2-8. After earning an M.S. in Reading, she moved into an instructional coaching and intervention role at Sherman Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin. A second Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership led to roles as district instructional resource teacher, a literacy coordinator, PK-12 director of instruction, and DPI consultant. Across the years, MJ has worked to support educators as they design engaging and effective learning opportunities that motivate achievement by building routines and scaffolds to guide students through successful learning experiences.
