Determining our students’ understanding and misconceptions is essential for their success. In this session, participants will determine the characteristics of higher-level tasks and consider how to modify lower-level tasks. They will identify the role that evidence and anticipation play in using evidence of student learning. Participants will consider next steps for specific mathematics tasks featured during the session. The session will also investigate how productive struggle contributes to student learning with these tasks. Participants will identify strategies for supporting productive struggle within their mathematics classroom. Classroom resources and activities will be shared.
Learning Outcomes will be:
- Describe characteristics of high-quality mathematics tasks.
- Sort tasks by their quality.
- Modify tasks to improve quality.
- Determine a process for soliciting and using evidence of student understanding.
