This course provides an update on all aspects associated with adding on a Cross Categorical Special Education license to an existing Special Education license. Topics covered include but are not limited to current criteria for determining various disabilities, current trends in serving students with disabilities (such as inclusion, transition plans, Assistive Technology, Common Core State Standards based IEPs, Curriculum Based Measurements, other Progress Monitoring tools and Response to Intervention, Behavior Intervention Plans and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports), current and challenging legal issues (such as functional behavioral assessments, IEP related topics, seclusion and restraint). The content of the course will primarily focus on the practice of special education as defined by Federal law IDEA and Wisconsin law Chapter 115. The course is organized into units of instruction with assigned readings, written assignments, discussions, and practice sessions. This course culminates with a final assessment and other artifacts that will be utilized in a teacher portfolio.
