Family & Community Engagement Summit

Dr. Karen L. Mapp, Ed.D.

Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and the Faculty Director of the Education Policy and Management Master's Program.  Over the past twenty years, Dr. Mapp's research and practice focus has been on the cultivation of partnerships among families, community members and educators that support student achievement and school improvement, including "Partners in Education: A Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships" (2014), and "From Private Citizens to Public Actors: The Development of Parent Leaders through Community Organizing" (2015) and "Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher's Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success" (2017).

 

Event Description

This single day event will engage participants in intensive discussion and activity on the subject of Family & Community Engagement: Supporting Students with IEPs.

 

Building the Capacity for Effective Family-School Partnerships

The purpose of this workshop is to provide information on and strategies to create and sustain systemic family-school partnerships that support student learning and school improvement.  The workshop is designed for diverse stakeholder groups (educators, school and program staff members, community members and partners, parents, district leaders, etc.) to learn what we know, given the current research, about the link between these partnerships and educational outcomes and the high impact strategies that lead to effective partnerships.

During this interactive workshop, Dr. Mapp will summarize the research and promising practice strategies featured in the 2007 publication Beyond the Bake Sale, the 2014 USDOE Dual Capacity Framework for Family-School Partnerships, and her most recent publication, Powerful Partnerships (2017).

 

Where’s the Beef?  The “Why” of Family Engagement

Over forty years of research identify school-family partnerships and family engagement as key components of student achievement and school improvement.  Dr. Mapp will summarize what we know from the research about the positive impact of family engagement on student, family, staff and organizational outcomes.

 

Where Do We Start?  Examining Our Core Beliefs

Despite the evidence, family engagement continues to be seen as a “nice to have” but not “necessary to do” part of the political discourse and the whole school reform narrative. Given that how we lead and what we identify as key priorities are linked to our core beliefs, the purpose of this session is to give participants an opportunity to interrogate and explore their beliefs about the engagement of families in creating and sustaining excellent and equitable schools for all children.

 

Building the Capacity for Effective Engagement

What are the most effective family engagement practices?  The final section of the workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore the research-based high impact strategies that lead to effective family engagement.  

Participants will identity and discuss the essential elements of effective partnerships and explore ways to retool and repurpose their current family engagement initiatives, including IEP focused initiatives, for better results.
