The Academy for Language and Literacy is a comprehensive reading training for all educators who work with young readers or struggling readers. This course will focus on enhancing a research informed knowledge base and quality instruction of the key elements of an effective early reading program. Participants will gain an understanding of what grade-specific goals are critical for enabling students to be proficient readers by the end of third grade.  The training will build capacity to teach within any reading program or intervention program to improve outcomes for all students.

Each session will explore the “HOW” of the topic:

  • How the skills develop
  • How to assess the development of the skill and what kind of instruction is necessary
  • How to differentiate instruction at varying points of development

Audience: 4K-3rd grade teachers, special education teachers, interventionists, reading specialists, literacy coaches, instructional paraprofessionals

Cost:        $400.00 per person for 2019-20 CESA 8 – CIA or Literacy Center Member School Districts.  $800.00 for all others

Day 1– July 30, 2019

Oral Language and Phonological Awareness

  • +Discover the Language/Literacy Hierarchy
  • +Identify the language in literacy systems
  • +Explore the phonological awareness continuum
  • +Experience phonological awareness learning activities
     

Day 2 – August 1, 2019

Letter Sound Proficiency and Phonemic Awareness

  • +Explore a path for developing onset and rime to proficiency
  • +Explore research validated methods for teaching alphabet knowledge (letters, sounds, written formations)
  • +Learn to accurately pronounce the vowel and consonant phonemes in isolation
  • +Assess our own understanding of phonemes

 

Day 3 – August 6, 2019

The Alphabet Principle and Word Recognition

  • +Examine the alphabetic principle and its critical goal in learning to read
  • +Explore how readers develop a sight vocabulary
  • +Explain the process of orthographic mapping
  • +Examine the stages of word recognition
  • +Outline a developmental approach to teaching reading
     

Day 4 – August 8, 2019

Phonics and Word Study

  • +Discern the difference between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study
  • +Examine how levels of phonological awareness contribute to reading development
  • +Explore phoneme-grapheme mapping
  • +Discover a strategy for phonic blending
  • +Review most the common phonics rules
  • +Explore strategies for promoting orthographic mapping
  • +Discuss instruction for words with irregular sound-spellings

CESA 8 will only provide full refund of registration fees depending on individual circumstances.
