Facilitator: Sherri Wilson, Director of Consultative Services at Scholastic Co-Hosted with: Colleen Timm, CESA 7 Learning Service Director and Becky Spengler, CESA 7 Integration Director Children perform better in school when their families are involved in their learning. How can you improve communication between home and school? How can you engage more families from diverse backgrounds and cultures? This workshop will provide creative ways to cultivate and sustain positive relationships with families and the greater community to ultimately assist each student in reaching his or her potential. Join us for the following professional learning opportunity Foundations of Family Engagement: In this session, participants will be introduced to research from the past 20 years as well as the U.S. Department of Education’s Dual-Capacity Framework for Effective Family-School Partnerships that demonstrate how certain types of family engagement benefit student learning. Through an interactive self-reflective exercise, participants will also learn about the conditions that must be present in every school to provide a solid foundation for building effective family partnerships. Sherri Wilson is the Director of Consultative Services at Scholastic and a founding partner of the Center for Active Family Engagement (Café). Formerly she served as the Senior Manager of Family Engagement at the National PTA. She provided training, information, and support to National PTA staff as well as to state and local members related to family engagement and the implementation of the PTA's National Standards for Family-School Partnerships.
