Morphology (or the study of bases and affixes to guide vocabulary instruction) is essential throughout schooling, according to current research and the standards. All too soon students are introduced to textbooks filled with longer, multisyllabic words. Readers are often unable to handle both the increased quantity of text and its complexity. An understanding of morphology, or the meaning parts that comprise words, is valuable for the development of vocabulary and word attack skills.
In this interactive, hands-on workshop, Van Cleave first engages participants in a brief overview of the origins of our language and characteristics of the major languages of influence as an important foundational step towards morphological awareness. Then, participants are introduced to best practices in morphological awareness and a study of advanced word decoding and encoding strategies. Participants explore a step-by-step system for direct instruction but also experiment with activities designed for content teachers who wish to bring
morphology into their subjects. Participants practice with each concept and learn tools useful for helping students understand and decode unfamiliar words.
