Struggling with your word study program?

Don’t know what word study principles to teach?

What should your curriculum include?

Is there some program that you should purchase?

All of these questions will be answered within this two-day workshop! Participants will examine the rationales and theories underpinning the teaching of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary of an authentic literacy classroom. Join us to investigate essential categories of learning and consider ways in which word study fits into a broader language and literacy framework. Together, we will analyze teaching and engage in inquiry that will deepen your understanding of how words work and serve as a set of instructional practices for effective teaching of a range of students.

WORKSHOP FACILITATED BY:

Nicole Lehr

LEARNING TARGETS
Participants will:

  • Explore the rationales for the importance of instruction in vocabulary, spelling, and word analysis skills in 3rd – 8th grades.
  • Understand the relationship between phonics, spelling, and vocabulary, and how students develop competencies over time.
  • Explore the five essential categories of learning: letter/sound relationships, spelling patterns, high frequency words, word meaning /vocabulary, and word structure.
  • Examine the importance of word consciousness and how to nurture in students an awareness, interest, and curiosity of words.
  • Build knowledge of how to provide explicit inquiry-based instruction that helps all students, including those who are learning the English language, develop essential understandings of how words work.
  • Learn to teach for word knowledge in whole and small group, and individual instructional settings.
  • Create an assessment system that measures the word learning knowledge of students.
