Ready or not, here comes the future!

“3, 2, 1… Ready or not..here I come!” Depending on your ‘hide and go seek” hiding spot, those words “ready or not” can elicit completely different feelings.  In this case, ‘ready’ means you have found a spot to hide, and ‘not’ probably means you are soon going to be ‘it’.  While I know many of you don’t have to have these rules explained to you, when it comes to school I believe we have some work to do when it comes to explaining the word ‘ready’....and helping students achieve ‘it’!

Many educational, and community, conversations are talking about what it means to be ‘Ready’.  Future Ready, College Ready, Community Ready, no matter which way, or by whom, the question is asked, these conversations come down to a question about learners having a profile equipped with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to meet the challenges of today's global economy/community.

The Portrait of a Graduate (PoG): Design. Position. Perform. series works with teams to align efforts as guided by, the development and realization of the ‘profile of a graduate’ (PoG).  As the Director of the Learning Strategies Center @CESA6 our work begins with, and continuously moves towards, our students’ success in life, work, and citizenship; what we call a ‘learning ready’ graduate profile.

Design: The workshop is geared to learn about a quality PoG and design a custom PoG for your organization/school/classroom.  The goal is that when designed, and positioned properly, the PoG becomes a powerful navigation tool to map and guide the creation of powerful learning experiences.
Position: Positioning a PoG as the starting line creates a ‘design forward’ approach to examining, and building, PoG aligned learning experiences.  By positioning the PoG as a guide, it helps to ensure credibility and coherence around education transformation efforts as it serves as both a navigation tool as well as an outcome. The PoG can be seen as a starting point and a finish line for an organization, but its strength comes from being positioned as a symbol of a shared vision that drives the creation of the learning experience for each learner’s ongoing journey.

Perform: Performance is now measured beyond traditional benchmarks as defined by a dynamic and powerful ‘profile of a graduate’ (PoG). Organizationally, the PoG brings together teaching, learning, curriculum, and assessment practices towards a shared and desired goal.  If done well by
teams, and fully brought to life inside of schools, we will see that as students learn today, they will see themselves positioned as being ‘ready’ for their tomorrow.

Outcomes:

  • Design - Participants will learn about a PoG, and design a custom PoG (district/school/department/classroom) for their local context
  • Position - Participants will immediately position the PoG into action as a symbolic aspect of a shared vision, and with the creation of ‘profile of a graduate learning experiences’.
  • Perform - Participants will establish a ‘plan on a page’ that defines a collection of evidence for local performance targets.
