This blended workshop has been canceled as of 10/29/18.

Presenter: Kathleen Budge

Cost: $475, includes lunch and Disrupting Poverty book

Description: Drawing upon decades of research and a myriad of authentic classroom experiences, in her book Disrupting Poverty Kathleen M. Budge dispels harmful myths, explains the facts, and urges educators to act against the debilitating effects of poverty on their students.

Budge shares the powerful voices of teachers—many of whom grew up in poverty—to amplify the five classroom practices that permeate the culture of successful high-poverty schools:

  1. Caring relationships and advocacy
  2. High expectations and support
  3. Commitment to equity
  4. Professional accountability for learning
  5. The courage and will to act.

In this unique, blended learning experience participants will spend a face to face day with Kathleen Budge, exploring classroom-tested strategies and practices. Two virtual follow-up sessions will offer participants the opportunity to reconnect with Kathleen as they work to implement strategies and practices in continued collaboration with colleagues.

Disrupting Poverty provides teachers, administrators, coaches, and others with the background information and the practical tools needed to help students reach their full potential.

About the Presenter:

Kathleen Budge is the coordinator of the Leadership Development Program at Boise State University in Idaho. She has led the development of this innovative, nontraditional preparation program, the purpose of which is to develop leaders who have the commitment and capabilities to lead schools where all students succeed.

Prior to joining the faculty at Boise State, Budge was the assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning at Educational Service District 113 in Olympia, Wash. She provided leadership to 45 predominantly rural school districts serving approximately 77, 000 students. She led the development of a highly successful, regional, job-embedded professional development model and facilitated data-based improvement planning with more than 150 schools.

Budge also has worked as a district curriculum director, an elementary principal, and an elementary and special education teacher for 17 years. She continues to maintain that her most important and significant work has been teaching 1st graders to read.
