At the end of Writer’s Workshop time each day, do you find yourself thinking, “I didn’t reach as many writers as I needed to today.” Do you find that your conferring sessions with writers tend to focus on similar skills and strategies? Do you think conferring is the one and only option? Think again!

While conferring is at the heart of the Writer’s Workshop, small group writing strategy instruction is another option that can maximize instructional time, while meeting the learners’ unique needs within your classroom. When used effectively, small group strategy lessons can provide highly-effective skill and strategy instruction, designed to support writers in meeting their writing goals.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Understand the difference between skills and strategies.
  • Learn the components / structure of a strategy lesson.
  • Determine how to set writing goals with students.
  • Plan for strategic skill / strategy instruction.
  • Understand strategies for supporting retention and transfer.

Those who are currently using a Writer’s Workshop approach within their classrooms.
