Project Objectives:
Through the learning experiences in the project, you will:
-
Learn about current research on the critical aspects of formative assessment specific to the mathematics classroom;
-
Connect formative assessment practices to classroom practices;
-
Learn about the use effective use of mathematics learning targets (including success criteria) for a unit of instruction based on mathematics learning progressions;
-
Engage in action research to integrate the aspects of formative assessment practices (eliciting and interpreting evidence, providing effective feedback, helping students learn to be more self-regulating in their mathematics learning) in a mathematics classroom and reflect on the effectiveness of the implementation;
-
Examine and evaluate current practices and structures within your own instruction to plan for next steps to embed formative assessment in your mathematics instruction.
Project Outcomes:
-
Develop a set of mathematics learning targets that serve as the basis for development of future learning targets;
-
Develop fluency with a set of strategies that support formative assessment practices around gathering and interpreting evidence, provide effective feedback to students, and teaching students how to effectively self- and peer-assess their mathematical work;
-
Over the project of a mathematics unit, document lesson planning, lesson implementation, and reflection around specific formative assessment techniques;
-
Create a plan that embeds elements of formative assessment into your mathematics instruction.
