Jan Richardson and Ellen Lewis will guide us through the RISE (Reading Intervention for Students to Excel) Framework which offers intensive, short-term targeted instruction for students who are English language learners, striving readers, or those who are not yet reading at grade-level. Instructional areas include decoding, reading comprehension, phonics and word study, and writing. Jan and Ellen will demonstrate the teaching moves and instruction practices within the Framework that will increase efficiency and effectiveness in meeting students’ reading needs. By the end of the day, we will have learned how to help students gain the confidence, proficiency, and skills that they need to excel as readers and exit long-term intervention.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to analyze assessments to pinpoint an instructional focus.
  • Practice effective prompts that improve strategic processing.
  • Explore engaging, hands-on word study activities that improve sight word knowledge and phonics skills.
  • Learn progressive steps for teaching comprehension that strengthen each reader's ability to construct meaning.
  • Understand how to support struggling writers through guided writing.

Who Should Attend?

1st - 8th grade teachers (classroom, special education, EL, and support specialists), Title I teachers and coordinators, reading specialists, and literacy and instructional leaders, such as coaches and principals.

Jan Richardson, America’s leading expert in guided reading, is a former teacher (K-college), reading specialist, Reading Recovery® teacher leader, and designer of staff development. She is currently an education consultant, providing schools with customized workshops and classroom demonstrations. Dr. Richardson’s best-selling Next Step Collection began with the publication of Next Step Guided Reading (Scholastic, 2009). The updated collection now includes The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading; The Guided Reading Teacher’s Companion: Prompts and Discussion Starters; Next Step Guided Reading in Action; and Next Step Guided Reading Assessment co-authored with Maria P. Walther. Jan also worked with Michele Dufresne from Pioneer Valley Books to develop Literacy Footprints: A Complete System for Supporting Guided Reading, which has lesson cards that follow Jan’s Next Step framework. Her newest book, Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention (Scholastic, 2018), written with Ellen Lewis, describes a powerful, short-term intervention that quickly accelerates striving readers.

Ellen Lewis is a reading teacher, Reading Recovery teacher, reading specialist, resource teacher, literacy consultant, and author. She has more than three decades of literacy teaching experience in the United States, Bermuda, England, Hong Kong, and Qatar. Ellen has worked side-by-side with Jan Richardson, partnering with teachers to implement a balanced literacy program in Title I schools with an emphasis on implementing best practice in guided reading. Their joint efforts contributed strongly towards Ellen’s Title I school being named as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2016, ‘for closing the gap’ among students. It was one of only five elementary schools in Virginia to receive the award. As a reading teacher, literacy leader, and literacy consultant, Ellen successfully collaborates with administrators and teachers to implement school wide comprehensive literacy programs by building capacity with job-embedded professional learning. Her model of professional development is to inform and coach teachers to support their own literacy development in grade level teams and vertical coordination.
