Kristi Mraz will lead us on a day-long expedition of the research-based mindsets that prove to boost effective instruction and impact student learning. We will investigate many facets that impact learning and build community, from integrating play, empathy, growth mindset, reflection, and emotional support to the physical environment. Kristi’s step-by-step strategies are practical and appropriate for a range of learners. With classroom videos, pictures, and plenty of research she will show us how to make every classroom one that hums!

“…start creating the classroom of your dreams from the very first minute of school,
a classroom that is research based, child centered,
and in step with the world today.”

— Christine Hertz and Kristine Mraz

Kristine (Kristi) Mraz is an award-winning expert in early childhood teaching and learning, including her cutting edge work on play-based child development and classroom artifacts. A former literacy consultant with the Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) and special education kindergarten teacher, Kristi is currently a coach in the New York City Public Schools, as well as a consultant for schools across the country and around the world. Kristi’s work centers around the lives and passions of young learners, sharing practices with educators that support a growth mindset; play-based learning; student ownership over classroom spaces, artifacts, and decision making; which all culminate in deep, engaged literacy learning and achievement.

Kristi is the co-author of several books for teachers. Among them are: Smarter Charts and Smarter Charts for Math, Science, and Social Studies (co-authored with Marjorie Martinelli); A Mindset for Learning: Teaching the Traits of Joyful, Independent Growth (co-authored with Christine Hertz); and Purposeful Play: A Teacher’s Guide to Igniting Deep and Joyful Learning Across the Day (co-authored with Alison Porcelli and Cheryl Tyler). Kristi Mraz’s current publication, co-authored with Christine Hertz, Kids 1st from Day 1: A Teacher's Guide to Today's Classroom, is the basis for this workshop.
