Stephanie Harvey - From Striving to Thriving: How to Grow Confident, Capable Readers

We need an intervention on interventions in education.  Every time a child reads even slightly below benchmark, we call for yet another program.  The research is clear – the best intervention is a good book a child can and wants to read!

Nothing correlates higher to reading achievement than reading volume. We need to curate our classroom libraries to ensure that all kids have access to a wide range of compelling texts. We need to book match relentlessly.  We need to provide expert research-based literacy instruction. We need to teach comprehension strategies explicitly.  And we need to build in plenty of time for kids to just plain read.

Access + Choice + Time + Volume. ACT NOW!

About Stephanie Harvey

If you are a literacy teacher, you've probably heard of Stephanie Harvey.  She is passionate about literacy.  She brings something special when she talks about literacy.  Passion.  Described by a colleague as “a gregarious, inquisitive, compassionate woman with boundless energy and a story for every occasion”, she is an author, educator and enthusiastic advocate for kids and for those who teach them to read, write, question, think and understand.  As Stephanie says, “Passion and wonder are contagious. No better way to fire up our kids than to share our own passion for and wonder about the world and all it has to offer.” She believes that schools need to be havens for thinking, incubators for deep thought and kindling for curiosity and inquiry.
