80% proficiency in Math? Let’s show you how!

Skill Development in Mathematics

January 12, 2018

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Thorp Elementary School, 605 S Clark Street, Thorp

Come learn how to improve student proficiency in mathematics. The Thorp School District welcomes Dr. Amanda VanDerHeyden, researcher and RtI leader to discuss research-based assessment and supplemental classroom instruction and interventions. Dr. VanDerHeyden is the founder of Spring Math, a web-based tool to assist educators in the implementation of Response to Intervention/Multi-Tiered System of Supports (RtI/MTSS) in mathematics. The focus of the training is RtI in mathematics, but we are offering participants a 25-student account with the training for $200.

Registration includes coffee, soda, donuts, fruit, and lunch. Rooms at the FairBridge Inn (715.669.5959) in Thorp have been blocked out for the night before the event. Thorp is conveniently located on State Highway 29 between Wausau and Eau Claire.

Cost:  $50/person or $200 includes Spring Math subscription for up to 25 students.

If paying by check, make check payable to CESA 10 and send to 725 West Park Avenue, Chippewa Falls WI  54729.  Please print "Thorp" on the memo line of the check.  Checks must be received by January 12, 2018.

9:00 am-10:30 am

MTSS Success Stories

Dr. VanDerHeyden has directed and evaluated numerous RtI implementations that have raised achievement and closed achievement gaps in the area of mathematics. Research data show that following evidence-based approaches to RtI can have a significant, positive effect on student achievement. We will learn more about the most effective RtI models, what their active ingredients are, and the results that can be attained with thoughtful and effective implementation.

10:45 am-12:00 pm

Math RtI

In this section of the workshop, we will learn the essential ingredients to effective core math instruction, how to evaluate the quality of core instruction in mathematics, a streamlined and highly effective approach to assessing mathematical skill development from Kindergarten through Grade 8 for all students, and how to build effective mathematics interventions for struggling students.

12:45pm-3:45pm

Spring Math

Spring Math is an online tool that directs high-impact instruction and skill development in math. While a Spring Math subscription is not necessary to implement the practices outlined by Dr. VanDerHeyden, it is an efficient way to improve student learning. This portion of the day will focus on the assessments and activities that come with a Spring Math subscription. Attendees will benefit from learning more about the system even if they do not choose to subscribe. Spring Math delivers screening assessments then summarizes and interprets findings. If a classwide intervention is recommended, everything needed to use classwide intervention is provided to the teacher within a user-friendly teacher dashboard. Where individual intervention is recommended, Spring Math directs the follow-up assessment to match the student with the right intervention and provides the complete intervention packet for the teacher. Spring Math monitors intervention progress, summarizes student data, and uses a coach dashboard to direct coach support for interventions that are not producing the necessary learning gains for at-risk students. Users have access to 130 generated-on-demand assessments, research-tested classwide intervention tools, and 550 complete individual intervention packets designed to take all students from numeracy to algebra readiness by Grade 8. Spring Math is being used in schools in 15 states with strong student learning gains in math. 100% of the first-year subscribers returned for year 2. The cost is $7 per student per year.
