Participants of this hands-on workshop will leave with completed pages for their demonstration notebook, a powerful tool for

conferring with readers and writers. In developing these pages, participants will learn three easy-to-replicate conferring formats and

a formula to quickly frame up effective conferring conversations with readers or writers.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Discover what is required to make the following conferring formats effective:
    • Research-Decide-Teach
    • Compliment
    • Coach Alongside
  • Be trained how to apply individual conferring formats to work with small groups.
  • Become skilled at using the conference to develop the reader/writer and not just improve the work in the current text.
  • Learn characteristics of an effective Teacher Demonstration Notebook.

Who should attend?

K-12 teachers of readers and/or writers, coaches, curriculum directors, principals.

Participants should bring:

  • A list of problems/challenges for readers and/or writers
  • Originals or copies of the following:
    • Student writing samples
    • Your anecdotal notes/observation notes
    • Informal reading assessments (comprehension conversations, writing about reading, running records)
    • Assessment checklists (learning progressions, rubrics, literacy continuum)
  • Notebook or binder with tabs (I use an artist sketchbook)
  • Colored fine tip markers/gel pens
  • Scissors
  • Two-sided tape or glue
