“The practice of number talks is one of the most powerful vehicles for helping students learn to reason with numbers and make mathematically convincing arguments, for building a solid foundation for algebraic reasoning, and for teaching mathematics as a sense building process.”

Ruth Parker, CEO of Mathematics Education Collaborative

A number talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful practice with mental computation.  This strategy is also useful in encouraging students to use multiple strategies and to explain their reasoning.

The examples in this workshop will focus primarily on whole numbers, fractions and decimals however, number talks are applicable to many other mathematic topics and is a useful strategy for effective math instruction.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Prepare for & establish successful number talks within your math instruction

  • Use a number talk as a formative assessment method

  • Help students make mathematically convincing arguments & critique the reasoning of others (Math Practice #3)
