Description:
The CDC's 2016 report stated that statistically, 1 in 68 children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (April 2016). As educators, it is important that we understand the history of autism and how that history has formed our current understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) so that we better understand our students' needs.  NeuroTribes: the Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, by Steven Silberman, helps define ASD in a historical context as well promotes the belief of "different not less" in the perception individuals with ASD today.

Course objectives:

Ø Review important researchers and advocates in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Ø Identify the ways that Autism Spectrum Disorder has been viewed throughout modern history.

Ø Discuss and dispel various myths that surround individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Ø Apply the information to an educational setting.

Graduate credit: Optional: 1 or 2 grad credit will be available thru UW-Oshkosh for an additional cost of $200 (payable to UW-Oshkosh) per credit.
