Deputy Pete Ehlert of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office will focus on why our children are at risk when using social media and the Internet, beginning with the impact technology has on the development of our youth. Deputy Ehlert will show how easy it is for a predator to target our kids and the methods that are used (grooming) while engaging children online. Specific examples of grooming will be presented and discussed during the session as well as a specific case study.

Sexting laws will be examined and you will learn why our children engage in this behavior and don’t think it’s a big deal. Popular apps among youth in our community will also be covered and you will see how kids get in trouble using these apps.

Find out what you can do to help keep our kids safe and discover the many valuable resources that are available for parents and educators. Pete will provide alternatives to traditional investigation and prosecution regarding the inappropriate use of technology and local initiatives that are currently at work in Winnebago County and the surrounding areas.

Related to technology and the use of social media, Pete will provide an oveview of the face of sex trafficking in Wisconsin—who is at risk, as well as physical and behavioral risk factors will be presented and discussed during the session.

Pete has been a Deputy Sheriff for 17 years with the last 15 at the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. He has served in many capacities including being assigned to the corrections, patrol, GPS and Transport Division, and currently serves as the Community Programs coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office. Pete works in the Marine Division as a primary boat operator and is a certified Field Training Officer and serves on the Winnebago County Unified Child Abduction Response Team (CART). Pete is also the DARE Officer for Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and teaches in ten schools throughout the County and reaches approximately 750 students per year and currently holds the position of Region 2 Director of the Wisconsin DARE Officers Association (WDOA). Pete serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association (WCPPA). Prior to becoming a Police Officer, Pete worked in the Nicolet School District in Glendale, WI.
