We believe that everyone can and should learn mathematics and we also believe that mathematical knowledge is one of the significant gatekeepers to higher education.
There is an ongoing debate about how best to teach mathematics. Rich math tasks, number talks, problem-based learning, direct instruction, and collaborative groups are all strategies or approaches that can be used to teach mathematics. How do we know which approach for teaching mathematics is best? It is not about which approach is best, it is about when to use it.
Choosing the right approach at the right time depending upon where learners are within the three phases of learning: surface, deep, or transfer, is the key so that teachers can design high-impact instruction in which all students succeed. This framework is from current research in mathematics combined with John Hattie's synthesis of more than 15 years of educational research.
-Participants will each receive a copy of the book, Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12
Outcomes:
- Learn how to choose appropriate instructional strategies at each of the three phases of the learning cycle
- Experience hgh-impact instruction through classroom video
- Understand how "effect size" is used to measure the impact of instructional strategies
Registration fee:
- $125 for CESA 5 School Improvement Consortium Members (**Click here for membership listings.**)
- $200 for non-members
-Fee includes light breakfast, lunch, and book: Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12
