This course provides an opportunity for teachers to learn about and begin the implementation of assessment practices in the mathematics classroom, especially formative assessment practices that promotes student ownership of learning through the use of learning goals and peer and self-assessment to monitor the progress toward the goals. We will be using resources developed by Cheryl Rose Tobey, Susan Creighton, and Emily Fagan from the Educational Development Center (EDC) in Massachusetts.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
- Expand educator understanding of all components of formative assessment, not just the assessment
- Provide teachers with a supporting atmosphere to apply new learning and achieve optimal results within their classrooms
- Knowledge of key research findings of formative and interim assessment practices in mathematics
- Numerous, ready-to-use tools and resources for learning about and supporting the implementation of formative assessment practices in the mathematics classroom
- Understanding of the connection between these practices and other state initiatives
- Build collegial relationships among mathematics teachers within a learning community
Instructional Methodology:
4 Face-to-face sessions: Each session is 1 day (6 contact hours per session) in length with time in between to practice and reflect.
Who should attend: All math teachers, K-12
Cost (without credits):
-$400 for School Improvement Members

Cost includes all 4 sessions, breakfast, lunch, and materials
This course will be available for 1 or 2 credits for an additional fee through Edgewood College.
An additional assignment is required.
