This highly interactive session will begin with a review the findings of Dr. Jeffrey Wilhelm’s two major studies of boys and their literacy, Going with the Flow... and Reading Don’t Fix No Chevys…, and how the findings explain issues of motivation and learning. Further, Dr. Wilhelm will lead us on an exploration of how to create the conditions of engagement and understanding in units, through the use of the inquiry model, and through specific lessons with the use of think aloud and action strategies.

Afternoon Session:

Diving Deep Into Nonfiction With Reader’s Rules of Notice  Dr. Wilhelm will delve into "the how" of teaching students to read and write nonfiction texts across the curriculum. Further, he will explore several techniques for engaging and assisting readers and writers to conscious competence.  Dr. Wilhelm will lead participants on a journey reframing units and lessons as inquiry / cognitive apprenticeship to make learning active and engaging.

The Goals and Outcomes
Participants will:

  • Understand and meet the conditions of motivation in unit and lesson planning.
  • Discover how to plan units using Essential Questions, Frontloading, constructional sequencing, daily deliverables / formative assessment and culminating projects.
  • Learn to plan lessons using visual strategies, think alouds, practice in miniature, questioning, and writing like a reader.
  • Use reader's rules of notice to assist readers and writers.
