Bringing Grammar Instruction to Life
Nancy Jones, Crandon Middle School Teacher with Darla Brink, CESA 8
August 11, 2017 l 9:00-3:00 PM l CESA 8 Office
Has grammar instruction been limited to worksheets?
Are you tired of teaching a concept, assessing it, and then students acting as if they never heard it a few weeks later?
The standard instructional approach has traditionally been isolating each skill as a silo of knowledge with no integrated connection. The knowledge is not internalized which leads to weak application and transfer into authentic writing.
Grammar instruction does not have to be boring, redundant, or unmeaningful
By applying a few new instructional practices, you will be able to say with excitement and vigor, “It’s alive!” A tactile, kinesthetic, and visual approach to grammar will revive your lessons with engagement, thinking, and even some laughter!
About the presenter: With over 17 years of teaching in the classroom, Nancy’s fundamental educational philosophy of, “If I can taste it, smell it, feel it, play it, or make it, that is how I will teach it,” has never wavered. From constructing a human ear structure for 5th graders to crawl through for a science lesson, to using toy chainsaws to explain the difference between independent and dependent clauses, Nancy’s approach brings understanding to all learners. Her efforts in the classroom were rewarded when she became a Kohl Fellow in 2015.
Cost: $75 for 2017-18 Literacy Center Member School Districts. $150 for all others
