Often lesson flow is governed by the readiness of the “middle majority” of students to move on. Students who work at a faster pace and catch on quickly are asked to sit quietly and wait. Students who work at a slower pace or struggle in mathematics move on to the next idea without getting to complete all of the related tasks. Unfortunately, many of these students are most in need of completing all of the tasks plus additional tasks to build understanding and confidence. The students who work at a faster pace need additional challenges.

In this seminar, participants will examine a phased approach to lesson progressions that meets the needs of all students without needing to plan separate lessons. In this design, time is available for all students to complete the tasks, build independence in making sense of unfamiliar tasks, develop deeper understandings, and continue to be challenged as the cognitive demand of the tasks increases. Time is also available to the teacher for conducting formative assessments and providing needed support. Participants will have an opportunity to design their own phased approach for a key concept at their grade level.

Learning objectives include:

  1. Participants will explore strategies for implementing the Phased Lesson Design.
  2. Participants will explore how to engage students in the learning of mathematics.

This workshop is offered for $50 per participant for those CESA 10 districts participating in Title II (Abbotsford, Altoona, Augusta, Bloomer, Bruce, Cadott, Colby, Cornell, Eleva-Strum, Gilmanton, Granton, Greenwood, Ladysmith, Lake Holcombe, Loyal, Neillsville, New Auburn, Osseo-Fairchild, Owen-Withee, Spencer, and Thorp), $350 per participant for CESA 10 districts not participating in Title II, and $500 per participant for all others.

Teacher Standards
WES1The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
WES2The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development.
WES3The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
WES4The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology to encourage children’s development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
WES7The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.
WES8The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil.
WES10The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well being and who acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.
