Description
Expand your repertoire of strategies to engage students in more meaningful mathematical discourse. We will start with talk moves that teachers can use to keep the discussion going and promote deeper student learning. We will also explore ways to help students take ownership of discussions and planning classroom tasks. While the content of the workshop is focused on mathematical discourse, most of the strategies are applicable to all subject areas and all grade levels.

Workshop Objectives:
Explore answers to the following questions:

  • How do I start mathematical conversations in the classroom?
  • How do I keep the conversation moving, engaging and meaningful?
  • How do I select tasks to use for the conversations?
  • How can I teach students to have more meaningful discussions in small groups?
  • How can I use classroom talk to build a supportive learning environment?

Who should attend?
Administrators, teacher leaders, classroom teachers and school-based teams
