CESA 5, in conjunction with the WI DPI and discretionary grant staff, have been working collaboratively for you to create the unique event, We Are Literacy.

The goal of this two-day event is to gain insight into effective practices in all literacy areas, and to promote current pedagogies and practices for embedding literacy into classrooms.

All educators and administrators will benefit from attending this event--literacy is in every school, subject, and grade!

Monday, 10/30
Keynote:  Harvey "Smokey" Daniels:  The Curious Classroom: Ten Entry Points for Student-Directed Inquiry

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban public school teacher, a university professor, a classroom consultant, writer, and book editor. He is the author of 18 books (and associated videos) on literacy, language, literature, and school change, published by Heinemann, Stenhouse, Corwin, and NCTE. All of Smokey’s work is aimed at bringing life to educational standards – making classrooms places of curiosity, engagement, collaboration, knowledge-building, caring, and taking action for social justice.

Tuesday, 10/31
Keynote:  Dr. Peter Jonas:
Using the Brain to Learn, Laugh, and Lead

The background, character, and learning styles of students are drastically changing.  Consequently, the teaching techniques and leadership styles need to address these changes.  Data from a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis indicate that engaging students with brain-based techniques are not only successful but can also be fun.  This presentation will explain the research and practice of using brain-based research, coupled with humor to enhance the learning and leadership processes.  The presentation will model the content of the material by using humor, as it is connected to 12 main "laws" of the brain to provide theory, and most importantly, practical aspects that are proven to work.  Participants will be in an interactive seminar and be able to take home a number of easy-to-use, practical strategies to engage, lead, and laugh.
