What impact do grades have on student motivation, engagement, and student learning?
How might we use assessments to promote and inspire learning?
How do our grading systems align with college and career ready indicators?
Do our assessments capture the learning and growth experienced by each student?

Objectives:
-- Understand the impact of zeroes and grades on student motivation
-- Understand the essential practice of providing effective feedback
-- Link feedback and assessments to identified learning targets
-- Identify a variety of formative assessments to use in the classroom and strategies for using the data to inform instructional practice
-- Identify strategies for reporting student learning other than grades
-- Identify alternatives in measuring growth of learning for summative unit assessments
-- Explore rubrics and use progressions as feedback and self-regulation tools

Formative assessment and feedback are identified among John Hattie’s top ten influences on student achievement (Visible Learning for Teachers, 2012), yet we continue to rely on grading practices that have more historical value than impact on student learning.  Universal Design for Learning (UDL) practices suggest that we provide options for expression and communication as well as options for self-regulation.  In order for students to shift their focus to learning, it is important for staff and students to have an understanding of the role of formative assessments, feedback, grading practices, and tools for self-assessing progress toward identified learning targets.

Target Audience:
Administrators, general education teachers, instructional coaches, special educators, bilingual and ESL resource teachers. For Grades 6-12.
Bring a colleague or two for continued discussions in your buildings; this workshop will begin the conversation.  On-site classroom practice and collegial conversations will extend these ideas and support implementation in classrooms.

Cost: $125 per person; includes lunch and book
Grad Credits available through Concordia University $141.25/credit - 1 or 2 credits available
**Credit information will be discussed on December 7.**
