This workshop is based on the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project approach to teaching content while blending in vital literacy skills articulated in the Common Core State Standards. Within the workshop, participants will learn instructional methods they can take back and implement in their content right away.
We will explore both the WHAT and HOW of balancing content and disciplinary literacy skills. We will focus on teaching students to transfer comprehension and writing skills across the disciplines.
This Workshop will be a good fit for those ready to integrate CCSS-Disciplinary Literacy into course content. While this workshop ties in well with districts implementing The Reading and Writing Units of Study from Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, this is not a requirement. All participants will glean information to strengthen instruction in any discipline.
Workshop objectives
- Participants will explore such methods as mini-lecture, read aloud, seminar, centers, inquiry groups and primary source use.
- Participants will receive a format for planning instruction that balances teaching vital content and CCSS disciplinary literacy skills.
- Participants will explore resources to assess and plan for meaningful instruction.
