Act 31 is the Wisconsin law that requires all public school districts and pre-service teacher programs to provide instruction in the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of the 11 federally recognized American Indian nations in the state.
This day-long workshop will include in-depth training and discussions regarding Act 31 (1989/1991). The focus will be to help educators understand the implementation of Act 31. The workshop is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and information they need to integrate the requirements of the law into lesson plans, material selections, pedagogical practices and district curriculum. Information about the history, treaty rights, sovereignty and culture of Wisconsin’s American Indian nations will be discussed throughout the workshop.
Workshop objectives
- Demonstrate awareness of events leading up to Wisconsin Act 31 (1989/1991) legislation.
- Increase ability to align classroom materials, presentations and curriculum with Wisconsin American Indian Studies or Act 31 (1989/1991).
- Examine educational materials for implementing Act 31 (1989/1991) in classroom and practice.
- Increase knowledge about Wisconsin American Indian tribal sovereignty, treaties and governance.
