Workshop Content: College and Career Ready IEPs provide IEP teams with a framework to accelerate growth of students with disabilities with a focus on closing achievement gaps. To do this, IEP teams must have high expectations for students, use a strength based and relationship driven model for working with students and families, and explore grade level academic standards and functional skills needed for students to be academically, socially, and emotionally prepared for life after high school.

IEP teams must make several considerations when discussing a student’s access to universal instruction.  These include access to standards, peers, instruction, activities, and school community.  In addition IEP teams must consider both the academic and functional skills students should be taught and/or accommodated and how academic and functional skills are inter-related in a way that impact a student’s ability to be successful and independent.  This sectional will walk through portions of new guidance developed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s College and Career Ready IEPs: Improving Outcomes for Students 3 through 21 in relation to improving student access to general education

Presenter: Daniel Parker, WDPI Family Engagement and Autism Consultant

As family Engagement and Autism Consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Special Education Team, Daniel provides professional development across the state of Wisconsin.  He has a unique blend of home based, general and special education teaching, and administrative background at the school district and statewide levels with at focus on data, social peer mediated interventions, and instructional design.  Daniel is the facilitator of DPI’s College and Career Ready IEP work group which is developing updated guidance to Individualized Educational Program teams to assist them in writing IEP’s tied to improved student outcomes for students with disabilities.

Daniel received a Masters Degree in Human Development and Family Life and a Masters Degree in Special Education both from the University of Kansas.  He has a wife, Sarah, a cat, Lily, and the cutest dog in the world, ZuZu.
