Routines Based Interview (RBI) Training

Increasing Engagement and Outcomes for Young Children with Special Needs

Presenter: Wendi Schreiter, CESA 8 Early Childhood Special Education Coordinator/Certiƒied Interviewer/Trainer for the RBI

Maximum 5 participants per team

Why RBI?

  • The RBI is a semi-structured conversation method for gathering information about daily routines and intervention  priorities.
  • RBI allows parents and teachers the opportunity to share information and take ownership for determining & prioritizing outcomes.
  • RBI can be used to create functional IFSP/IEPs, complete eligibility information, determine present level of functioning in the three child outcomes (Indicator 3/7 and Indicator 4/8), and build positive relationships with families.
  • The RBI results in a functional intervention plan, increased child engagement in everyday routines, and improved behavior, social interactions, and learning.

Participants will learn how to conduct an RBI, observe an RBI in action, and learn how to use the information to connect with all aspects of their work.

Target Audience:

  • Early Childhood Special Educators
  • School Psychologist
