Understanding ASD – Characteristics and Visual Supports –EBP
When asking people to describe people with autism, you are likely to get a stereotype . . .
Have you ever wondered why the symbol for autism is a puzzle piece?
The neurology of autism may cause confusion in many children on the autism spectrum while trying to interpret social and emotional relationship dynamics, communication in general, following instructions or other information presented mainly through the auditory learning channel, coordinating motor planning and other gross and fine motor skills during transitions and adaptive skills to name a few. In order todevelop effective programming utilizing evidenced based practices (EBP) for individualson the ASD, it is necessary to understand the characteristics that underlie “unskilled” areas (e.g., cognitive, language/communication, social, restricted patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, self- regulation and sensory differences, etc.) of concern, as well as, their strengths. A growing body of literature is providing strategies for addressing the needs to individuals with ASD. This presentation will include a thorough understanding of the characteristics of learners with ASD as well as providing you a thorough understanding of the evidenced base practice (EBP) of visual supports. We will provide some time at the end of the workshop for Visual Support Make It - Take It for those who wish to stay. This full day workshop is appropriate for any educators or family members assisting students on the autism spectrum. It is hoped that participants will register for the follow-up sessions this school year that will address further EBP’s.
Presenter: Dawn Mannebach, CESA 8 Autism Consultant - Dawn is a continuing educator in the area of autism spectrum disorders as well as trauma sensitive consequences that occur to individual’s on the autism spectrum when the characteristics as well as the evidence based practices (EBP’s) are not understood in their necessary implementation at all integral levels for autistic children in all their environments, events, and interactions with others.
We hope to provide you with an introduction to the autism spectrum as well as provide some information about the EBP of visual supports and an opportunity at the end of the workshop to do some Make It Take It of visual supports for your students. We also hope that you will all consider following the upcoming autism trainings that will provide more instruction and support in the other EBP’s of prompting, positive reinforcements and self-regulation also involving sensory system understanding and supports.
Cost: $75 per participant per workshop for CESA 8 - SNPD member school districts. $150 per person per workshop for all others
