Computational Strategies That Develop Deep Comprehension and Number Fluency Grades 4-6

A first step toward more effective math instruction is to move away from an emphasis on teaching computation as a series of rote rules and memorization of basic facts. This workshop will focus on developing student comprehension of computation through conceptual understanding of what to do and why. We will explore multiple strategies for solving computation problems so that we can better meet all student needs. The goal of this workshop is  to help you develop students who not only are capable of solving computation problems, but who also truly understand computation and can apply their thinking to new problem situations. This workshop will focus on teaching computation through an emphasis on place value understanding and the properties of operations as recommended in the Common Core State Math Standards. We will explore composing and decomposing numbers, splitting or branching numbers, compensation, open number lines, the area model for multiplication of whole numbers and fractions, as well as numerous other strategies that will lead to greater understanding of number operations and fact fluency.

$50 per person for CESA 8 School Districts
