The academy is comprehensive reading training for early literacy educators. Participants will strengthen instructional pedagogy and explore classroom applications with other early literacy educators throughout the region. The training builds capacity to teach within any reading program.
Academy includes three summer dates and three dates during the first semester of the
2015-16 school year. You may sign up all six dates or individual workshop days.
All workshops will be held at CESA 8 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily
Audience: Kindergarten and first grade teachers, Interventionists, Reading Specialists, Literacy Coaches
Cost: Attend all six sessions: $300.00 per person for 2015-16 CIA – Literacy Center Member School Districts. $450.00 for all others.
Pick and choose sessions: $100.00 per person per session for 2015-16 CIA – Literacy Center Member School. $150.00 per person per session for all others
Day 1 – August 10, 2015 - The Big Picture
- The reading deficit, the brain and reading, scientific approach to reading instruction, essential components of reading instruction, reading assessment, downward spiral of reading failure and academic language Structure of English
- Phonemes, consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes, sound/spellings, syllables, onset-rime, and morphemes
Day 2 – August 17, 2015 - Early Literacy
- Print awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness
Day 3 – August 18. 2015 - Decoding and Word Recognition
- Phonics: Systematic and explicit instruction, approaches to instruction, effective instructional techniques, scope and sequence, decoding regular words, blending routines, automatic word recognition, decodable text, phonograms, word work for encoding and decoding)
Day 4 – October 6, 2015 - Decoding and Word Recognition
- Phonics: Classroom Application
- Irregular Word Reading: High-frequency irregular words and irregular word reading Fluency
- Accuracy, rate, prosody, fluency assessment, fluency instruction
Day 5 – November 4, 2015 - Vocabulary - Specific word instruction, selecting words to teach, rich and robust instruction, lesson models and specific strategies
- Word learning strategies
- Word consciousness
Day 6 – December 10, 2015 - Comprehension - Fundamentals of comprehension, comprehension strategies, literary text, informational text, close reading and text dependent questions
