Presenter: Dale A. Bailey - Speech/Language Pathologist & Statewide Early Literacy Coordinator
Dale was initially licensed as a speech-language pathologist and primarily provided speech-language evaluation, therapeutic, and consultation services Birth to 6 for approximately 8 years in Maine. Interests in language and literacy development led to Dale becoming certified to conduct Learning Disability (LD) evaluations and provide LD consultation. Over a 10 year period, Dale conducted individualized LD evaluations and worked with hundreds of individuals with learning challenges and learning disabilities (K-12), including reading disabilities such as dyslexia. Dale has consulted extensively on the connection between oral language (listening & speaking) and written language (reading and writing). He has also provided continuing education to general education and special education teachers and has consulted in the areas of assistive technology, learning, curriculum access/adaptation and data/school improvement. Dale has held an adjunct faculty position at the University of Maine since 2006, teaching courses in the areas of language development, reading/writing intervention, and special education assessment.
Participants will learn:
- how/where written expression fits into a language development context
- about the foundational skills that support written expression development
- assessment strategies that support written expression development
- how to use assessment information to design effective instruction in written expression
- instructional strategies that support written expression
- what instructional strategies are used in other/CESA 8 school
Target Audience: General and special education teachers teaching students grades 3-12 who are struggling with language and/or reading/writing.
COST: $40 per person for CESA 8 Student Needs Professional Development (SNPD) member districts; $80 per person for all other districts.
