Genetic Variation and the Flowering Plant Life Cycle with Wisconsin Fast Plants

Program Presenter: Hedi Baxter-Lauffer, Director of Wisconsin Fast Plants, UW-Madison

Short description

Join us to learn about inquiries and investigations that use Wisconsin Fast Plants to teach about growth, development, and reproduction in flowering plants and the genetic and phenotypic variation that occurs through sexual reproduction.

Abstract

Using Wisconsin Fast Plants in this highly interactive session, we will share examples of genetic variations in Fast Plants that follow a Mendelian inheritance pattern. These can be used as concrete examples from which students can develop models that describe why sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic (and phenotypic) variation (see NGSS Middle School Life Science 3-2 and High School Life Science 3-3).

In addition, you will learn how to plant and tend Fast Plants from seed to seed production, a month-long process that can be used to guide students in exploring structures and functions in plants, flowering, pollination, and variation.  We will demonstrate creative methods for engaging students with data they have collected to seek patterns in variation to gain both a better understanding of the flowering plant life cycle and how normal variation occurs within a population.
