What is a Routines-Based Interview (RBI)?

  • Interview of the family and/or caregiver/teachers using semi-structured format
  • Talk through the child’s daily routine to “quantify” the child’s
    • Social Interactions (connection with others)
      • Positive social-emotional skills (COSF Outcome 1)
    • Engagement (participation and learning from environment)
      • Acquiring and using knowledge and skills (COSF outcome 2)
    • Independence (using skills to meet needs)
      • Taking appropriate actions to meet needs (COSF outcome 3)
  • Rate level of success for each routine and prioritize what is needed for success

Benefits of using RBI:

  • Facilitates early relationship building
  • Expedites the process, by combining RBI and evaluation
  • Yields functional view of child’s development
  • Includes family priorities early in process
  • Can shift the focus to functional (OSEP Outcomes) areas versus separate domains
  • Provides natural jumping off point to goal identification
  • Much of IEP/IFSP can be completed with information collected from the RBI
  • Sets the stage for functional services

What training will offer:

  • Participants will receive an intensive hands-on training opportunity including demonstration, practice and feedback.
  • Participants will discuss how to integrate this with your current evaluation for eligibility practices
  • Participants will discuss what is needed to bridge into implementation
  • This is an opportunity to learn the process of a routines-based interview, which leads to building stronger family relationships, writing more functional goals and rating outcomes.

Audience:  Early Childhood Special teachers, Speech Therapists, Birth to Three Providers, Diagnostic Teachers, School Psychologists, and Special Education Directors. Teams are encouraged to attend to learn efficient approaches to gathering and sharing priority information from the interview, and what they will need to bridge to implementation
