During the plan phase of the PDSA teachers are partnering with students to set short term plans with students that will link directly with the overarching yearly goals referenced earlier. These goals are measurable and written in student-friendly language. They are the critical things that students should know or be able to do as a result of the course work.
In the second phase of the PDSA teachers and students collaborate to discuss what they will do to accomplish the goal. When done well students and teachers will both identify the specific actions and activities that they can do to master the outcomes discussed.
The third component of the PDSA requires students and teachers to study the results. In this phase teachers discuss the results with students and reflect on what all parties might have done to achieve at an even higher rate.
The final step of the process is the Action. This is the crux of the entire PDSA process and the very essence of continuous improvement. Based on the study phase and the student reflection teachers make the necessary changes to instruction.
