Teaching vocabulary is a key component of the Common Core State Standards.  Helping our students build and “own” their vocabulary is critical to their  literacy skills, achievement on assessments and their success in career and college.

In this workshop, participants will receive materials and activities that can be used in the classroom and learn how to identify vocabulary for explicit instruction and explore specific research supported vocabulary activities to help students build their listening, speaking, reading and writing vocabularies, including:

  • Current research on vocabulary instruction involving  Tier II words, indirect and direct instruction, multiple exposures, structural analysis, context clues, and using resources
  • Strategies such as semantic and mind mapping, word art, right/left brain definitions, context mapping, synonym circles, vocabulary tableau, vocabulary links, Wordle walls, shades of meaning chains, grammar connection, etc.
  • Current research on academic vocabulary instruction involving Tier III words,  content literacy strategies, close reading, and instructional routines
  • Technology enhancements

Cost:
$75 per person for SI Members
$245 per person for non-Members
**Includes lunch and materials
