Sectional 1: Brief Overview – Introduction of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – Characteristics and Prompting!
When asking people to describe people with autism, you are likely to get a stereotype……Have you ever wondered why the symbol for autism is a puzzle piece? The neurology of autism presents many challenges in relation to social relationships, instruction, transitions, social communication, and adaptive skills to name a few. In order to develop effective programming utilizing evidenced based practices (EBP) for individuals on the ASD, it is necessary to understand the characteristics that underlie “unskilled” areas (e.g., cognitive, language/communication, social, restricted patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, and sensory differences, etc.) of concern, as well as, their strengths. A growing body of literature is providing strategies for addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. This presentation will include a brief overview of the characteristics of learners with ASD and then go into a brief overview of the EBP of Prompting.
Sectional 2: Reading Disability Simulation
This session is a hands on activity that lets participants experience some of the challenges and frustrations by students with a language-based learning disability. The simulation provides a thought-provoking activity for anyone interested in understanding the lives of students with this disability.
Sectional 3: Trauma Informed Care/A Little of This and That
This will be an overview on basic philosophy and principles of Trauma Informed Care. The presenter (Dan Holstead from Advocates for Healthy Transitional Living, LLC), will define trauma, explain prevalence, and information regarding the symptoms. Participants will have an understanding of children who have experienced trauma and what does that look like.
A Little of This and That - This presentation will focus on a little of everything! A quick overview of the new assessments that have been introduced this year. We will also go over the latest acronyms that are being “talked about”. This session will be a potpourri of everything in education.
Cost: $30.00 per person for CESA 8 SNPD member districts; $60.00 per person for all other districts ($20 per person for districts sending 20 or more paraprofessionals)
