Join CESA 5 in welcoming Sara Shaver from Compass Counseling in an interactive, engaging, and timely session that focuses on handling grief in the school setting.  Whether you are a counselor, teacher, or paraprofessional, you see students who are deeply impacted by grief and loss.  This workshop will provide strategies for understanding and addressing grief with students as well as discuss the current best practices in delivering grief counseling.  Participants will leave the training better equipped to effectively support students navigating the grieving process.

Objectives:

  • Identify the stages of grief
  • Understand how kids grieve differently than adults due to their developmental stages and limited life experiences
  • Learn the benefits of talking with kids about the incident/loss
  • Identify the needs of the grieving child and behaviors that signal concern
  • Build your tool box for helping a child grieve including helping to build a “legacy”
  • Become more insightful in the need for cultural sensitivity and awareness of your own grief experience
  • Identify preventative measures that can help buffer the pain of loss
