KEYNOTES
“I Can Throw an Orange Like a Baseball, but I Can’t Eat a Baseball Like an Orange” ~ Jarod Kintz
Beth Tepper, CESA 9 Early Childhood Program Support Teacher

We will be diving in to some “juicy” topics which will give insight into how we can best do our work.

  • What is my personality and how does knowing that help with interacting with other adults and children?
  • How do children learn best?
  • What is the sequence of learning?
  • How can I help build vocabulary?
  • Building relationships

Keeping It Confidential and Optimal Communication with Families
Evelyn Azbell, WSPEI Family Engagement Coordinator CESAs 9 & 12, WSPEI Regional DFEL Trainer CESAs 8, 9 & 12 and WSPEI Technology Facilitator

In this key note you will learn about confidentiality laws, policies, and requirements. Identifying different types of pupil records will be discussed as well as ways to distinguish what is confidential and what’s not. Strategies will be covered on being sensitive to confidentiality in verbal and written exchanges with student’s families in a positive, friendly manner. The importance of recognizing and understanding different communication styles and applying the concepts of positions and interests to family school interactions is key in building partnerships between home and school.

SECTIONALS

Making Challenging Behaviors Less of a Challenge
Scott Wallace, CESA #9 Behavior Strategist

During this sectional we will discuss the art of de-escalation in the academic setting, social setting and a problem solving approach to addressing maladaptive behaviors as they occur in a proactive manner to minimize the frequency intensity and duration of acting out behaviors. We will also discuss how we can use the Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) and data collection to improve student academic and behavioral outcomes.

Diving Deeper with Comprehension
Casey Gretzinger, Reading Specialist, Rhinelander School District

Explicit strategy instruction is at the core of good comprehension instruction. Using “Before,” “During,” and “After” reading strategies provides students with the opportunity to strengthen and deepen their understanding. This session will investigate comprehension strategies that allow paraprofessionals to provide students with opportunities to see, learn, and use while reading. In the coming years, our students will need to be literate in ways we cannot yet imagine. Let’s explore ways we can build a solid foundation for reading comprehension.
