Mental Health First Aid

Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack --- even if you have no clinical training --- Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn to help.

Shortened School Day: What Individualized Education Program (IEP) Teams Need to Know

Each year the Special Education Team at DPI receives many questions from parents, educators, and community members about students with disabilities whose school day is shorter than their nondisabled peers. Shortening a student's school day is a very restrictive option and all involved in a student’s education should be aware of its potential implications, including the potential impact on the provision of a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This session will provide participants with review of recent DPI guidance on this important topic. There will be time for questions.

Summary: Each year the Special Education Team at DPI receives many questions from parents, educators, and community members about students with disabilities whose behavior effects their ability to function in the school setting. Solutions including shortening a student’s day or changing a student’s placement are often very restrictive options and require careful consideration. Many times, there are other, more proactive practices that can be implemented without significant changes to a student’s placement. All involved in a student’s education should be aware of the potential implications of IEP and placement changes, including the potential impact on the provision of a free, appropriate public education (FAPE). This session will provide participants with a review of recent DPI guidance on shortened school days and proactive strategies that can support academic and social emotional learning such as functional behavior assessment, behavior intervention plans, and other interventions. Related legal requirements will be presented first followed by the discussion of proactive strategies. There will be a break during this double session.

The ACE Interface provides a foundational understanding of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study as it applies to lifelong physical, mental and behavioral health outcomes, including the impact of trauma on brain development from the neuroscience perspective, as well as the hope of resilience research.
