The 8 Essential Mathematical Practices in Secondary Math
2 non-consecutive days (can sign up for day one only or both days)
Grades 6-12 teachers, instructional coaches, administrators
DAY 1: November 19, Day 2 - TBN
This workshop will help teachers understand how to best prepare their students for the next generation Wisconsin mathematics assessment program designed by Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortia. Students will be asked to construct sound mathematical arguments, critique the reasoning of others, engage in complex problem solving, and demonstrate mathematical fluency and precision on both the computer adaptive assessment and performance task.
According to the DPI, “mathematical understanding is the intersection of these practices and mathematics content. It is critical that the Standards for Mathematical Practice are embedded in daily mathematics instruction.” With this in mind, participants of this workshop will deepen their understanding of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice. Participants will explore how the practices are demonstrated across grades K-12, how to plan for meaningful integration into instruction, and how to connect the practices to the standards for mathematical content. Participants will learn strategies they can use to integrate these practices into their own instruction. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and discourse designed to increase their understanding of the eight mathematical practices and prepare for immediate implementation in the classroom.
OUTCOMES:
Understand the key characteristics of the eight mathematical practices and how these standards impact instruction.
Be able select and implement a strategy to facilitate student engagement with each of the eight mathematical practices.
RESOURCES PROVIDED TO PARTICIPANTS:
Planning tools for integrating the eight mathematical practices
Classroom activities ready for immediate implementation
Cost: $150.00 for both days/ $75.00 for Day 1 Only per participant for CIA Member school districts. $300.00 for both days/ $150 for Day 1 Only for all others.
