Math Performance Tasks
What are math performance tasks and why should we be using them when teaching mathematics in our classrooms? What should a performance task look like? How do we make sure we are following the “rules of rigor” that the Common Core State Standards and the SMARTER Balanced assessment are insisting on with performance tasks? Do we all need to create performance tasks for our students or are there sites and resources available where we can find tasks already created?
All students should learn and be able to use basic skills, apply understanding and solve problems. All three areas are emphasized equally in the instruction of mathematics. Skills without conceptual understanding are meaningless; conceptual understanding without skills is inefficient. Without problem solving, basic skills and conceptual understanding have no purpose.
Every grade level from Kindergarten through High School has math standards that require students to show conceptual understanding and knowledge of basic skills by solving word problems. The Mathematical Practice Standards center around solving real world problems – making sense of the problem, modeling with mathematics, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, communicating, looking for familiar structures, looking for repeated reasoning, using appropriate tools and attending to precision. They require our students to link classroom mathematics to everyday life, work, and decision making.
In this session, we will look at rigorous, standards based performance tasks at each grade level. We will look at the different levels of rigor and depth of knowledge that we need to be conscious of when choosing performance tasks for our students. We will also explore different websites and resources that provide quality performance tasks at each grade level.
