The Common Core State Standards Team, Special Education Team, and Student Services/Prevention and Wellness Team at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction are offering a new professional development opportunity in recognition of the work educators do to support learners.

Morning Schedule: Never before have we needed to leverage our assets, expertise and resources to address issues and problems we face. However, our history of silos has left us with a need for new ways to work together on issues, to value each other’s expertise, to strengthen the relationships required to solve problems and promote action. We will examine and practice strategies of collaboration, allowing us to better share information, better listen to and value the thinking of others, to engage in working together and to build consensus. These topics will be presented in the context of MultiLevel Systems of Support (MLSS).

Afternoon Schedule: Individuals choose two of three breakout sessions (1 hour each) with 15 minute break between

breakouts, and 30 minutes to reconvene at the end to share with their team what they’ve learned.

School-based Mental Health (DPI School Psychology Consultant, Kathryn Bush)

· Learn about (1) interconnecting school-based mental health and school-wide positive behavior support; (2) the models of school-based mental health including satellite mental health clinics in schools; (3) the structure of mental health services available through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services including county– or region-based CCS & CSTs.

· Selecting Interventions for MLSS and the SLD Rule (Literacy and SLD Consultants, Barb Novak and Deb Heiss)

· In MLSS, students who need additional support or challenges beyond the Core may require interventions. Learn the rules that apply, how to collaborate around the selection process, and keep “common sense” at the fore.

· DPI’s Latest and Greatest Literacy Resources (Literacy Consultant, Laura Adams)

DPI Literacy Consultants will share their latest and greatest literacy resources for supporting all learners in universal/core literacy instruction. These resources will be examined in the light of personal beliefs about literacy and literacy instruction, and emphasis will be placed on how educators can collaborate around these resources.
