A number talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful practice with mental computation.
“The practice of number talks is one of the most powerful vehicles for helping students learn to reason with numbers and make mathematically convincing arguments, for building a solid foundation for algebraic reasoning, and for teaching mathematics as a sense bulding process.”…Ruth Parker, CEO of Mathematics Education Collaborative
This workshop will focus on how to establish number talks within your math instruction, how to prepare for successful number talks, and how to use this powerful tool for formative assessment.
Implementing number talks will help your students meet Math Practice Standard #3 as they make mathematically convincing arguments and begin to critque the reasoning of others. This workshop will provide you with the skills and resources to make this shift in your instruction and help you become a more effective math instructor.
Implementing number talks will help students on the Smarter Balance Assessment where they will be expected to explain their thinking and justify their solutions.
