Autism: "Relationships"Autism is a life-long developmental difference that affects a person’s ability to communicate, form relationships, and respond appropriately to the environment. Autism results from a neurological difference that impedes “normal” brain development in the areas of social interactions and communication skills. During this breakout session, we will focus specifically in the area of social interactions and authentic relationship building. In addition, we will take a look at our own “neurotypical” perspectives and how we communicate about the behaviors we see with children on the autism spectrum. To quote Judy Endow, “All human beings look out at the world through eyeglasses imposed upon them by their own neurology. Then, they assign meaning to the behavior of others according to the meaning that behavior would have were they themselves engaged in it. Most times the guess is correct, but sometimes – like when neurotypicals (NTs) are looking at autistics – the guess can be wrong.” (pg. 12, Painted Words Aspects of Autism Translated)
New Medicaid Billing Updates: MANDATORY for OT, OTA, PT, PTA, and Speech & Language employees. Participants need to bring a laptop or ipad to this session.
Assessments: Act Aspire, ACT, Smarter Balance, and Dynamic Learning Maps are all new tests for this school year. The change for assessments also means new IEP forms. This will be a quick overview on the changes for next year regarding assessments and forms.
Breakout session II 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM:
Google: Continuation from breakout session I.
Assistive Technology: "Apps for Literacy" ~ Exploration of apps that facilitate and support the use of Universal Design for Learning for Literacy in reading and writitng. Implementing UDL through the use of multiple means of OCR options for reading, writing, note taking, and organization. Participants will be actively involved in the exploration of all topics being presented and leave with an extensive list of apps and support tools to empower learning. This is a repeat of session I.
Autism: "Challenging Behavior" Children with Autism often find changes in their environment or daily routine difficult to manage. Activities and events throughout the day can cause stress to build and cause an anxious learner to become even more anxious triggering a “meltdown.” While remembering, “One child on the autism spectrum is one child on the autism spectrum”, this breakout session will focus on some evidence-based practices for challenging behaviors.
